What You Should Know about Adult Dog Training

Adult dog training requires determination and the right information in order to be effective. It is a fact that adult dogs are more difficult to train than puppies. Adult dog training stick to the same pattern in training puppies so you can easily learn how to train your older dog as long as you have proper guidance.

According to studies, dogs are generally smart and they have the same level of intelligence of a young child. It is important to be patient when it comes to adult dog training. The success depends on the individual dog and on the trainer. Keep in mind that it is actually possible to train adult dogs but the techniques may be quite different. Here are some useful tips that can help you in your adult dog training task:

1. You must be stricter and sterner when it comes to training your adult dog.

2. It is important to understand your dog’s background. You need to know how he or she had been trained. It is recommended to talk to the previous owner in order to know everything about the dog.

3. On the first day, house-train your dog. Show him the location of the bathroom and the place to remove waste. Also, try to praise your dog whenever he or she follows your instructions.

4. Train your dog by doing tricks. You can do this by making your dog think that anything he or she does is his or her own idea. For instance, if your dog sits down, immediately exclaim ‘sit’ and repeat this for several times. This way, the dog will familiarize the word ‘sit’ as a command to sit down. You can try this method to other different tricks such as fetch, stay, come and others.

5. Make sure to keep every training session brief - three to five minutes each session is probably good enough.

6. Remember that giving reward to your dog is very important so make it a point to give a treat every time your dog makes a right action.
